China analysis - McLaren strike back in ShanghaiApril 18, 2011 (17:20) [ Indexed from Formula1.com ] Saturday in China told a pretty familiar tale, with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel clinching pole yet again. Surely it was just a matter of course that the Australian and Malaysian race winner would strike three-times lucky in Shanghai?
Not so. A slow start for Vettel, a flurry of pit stops, an array of tyre strategies and some pretty mean overtakes mixed up the field. Amidst all the drama it was McLaren's Lewis Hamilton who kept his head to secure his first win since last August's Belgian Grand Prix. An honourable mention must also go to Red Bull's Mark Webber who transformed the misery of 18th on the grid into a podium triumph. Race - Hamilton takes sensational Shanghai winApril 17, 2011 (11:55) [ Indexed from Formula1.com ] Lewis Hamilton scored a fabulous victory for McLaren in a Chinese race of excellent drives, catching and passing Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel on the 52nd of the 56 laps as the reigning world champion's gamble on a two-stop strategy - and a 25-lap run on Pirelli's hard rubber - just failed to pay off.
Behind them, Mark Webber drove a brilliant race from 18th to third in the second Red Bull, only seven seconds behind Hamilton, after catching and despatching Mercedes' Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, then doing the same to Ferrari's Felipe Massa, Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes and McLaren's Jenson Button in the closing stages. Qualifying - Vettel storms to Shanghai poleApril 16, 2011 (09:45) [ Indexed from Formula1.com ] Sebastian Vettel took yet another pole position for Red Bull in a disjointed but exciting qualifying session in Shanghai on Saturday afternoon.
In overcast conditions the Red Bull driver performed his usual trick of pulling something extra out of the bag in Q3 and moved well clear of the McLarens of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. The world champion lapped in 1m 33.706s, far and away the fastest time of the weekend, leaving Button to 1m 34.421s and Hamilton to 1m 34.463s, a wobble exiting the final corner costing him crucial fractions.
